3 Great Day Trips in Southern California
By: Chris Ruggiero
Before I moved to Southern California, I can remember visiting on vacation for a week and the pressure we felt to cram everything we wanted to do into a week. We were so exhausted because there was just so much to do. It was rare for us to just sit back and relax and enjoy which is a trademark of Southern California. As a resident, I jotted down some ideas on some fun things to do when you are visiting. Don't overpack your week. Remember to have fun but also sick back and smile.

The Getty Museum - Owned by the Getty Foundation and set up by the late J. Paul Getty, the oil tycoon, the Getty Museum now has two locations. They have the original located off the 405 freeway outside of LA and the other in Malibu. The art collection is pretty spectacular. No matter what your art preferences, you'll find something to suit your fancy. Personally, I was awestruck at the collection including the Van Gogh paintings (my favorite artist along with Raphael). The Getty is also the richest museum in the United States. Tickets are free. You'll just have to pay for parking. And the grounds are the most impressive I have ever seen of any museum in the world. Interested in another museum, the Smithsonian has a Free Museum Day coming up on Sept 25th.

Zuma Beach - Located in Malibu, this part of the California Coastline is the quintessential SoCal beach. It's got great waves and surf, great views of the ocean, dolphin that swim by the shoreline, and million dollar homes behind you overlooking the ocean. It's very family-friendly and very safe. Bring a cooler of food and drink and have a family picnic. Avoid bringing alcohol as the police will be sure to inspect and will most definitely write a ticket. Stop by the local Sunset Restaurant and have a delish fish taco, a California specialty. Zuma Beach is located just about an hour from the Disney Vacation Club in Anaheim for a fun and family-friendly stay.

A wonderful outdoor and nature experience is ironically named after an infamous bank robber (Tiburico Vasquez) rom the previous century. Vasquez Rocks is a beautiful natural rock formation that is a great location for picnics, hiking and meditation. At peaks you'll have amazing views of the area. And the hikes through the canyon are a lot of fun. Be sure to bring a camera because you'll want to capture these views for the future. As a bonus, get here to watch the sunrise. And on Easter, you can catch a wonderful church service at sunrise. If you're visiting, you'll find great vacation rentals for this area within a couple hours south in San Diego or within an hour on the beach in Ventura or Laguna.

In summary, you'll find southern California to be packed with things to do when visiting on vacation. There weather is always great with sun and clear skies. You can visit the waterparks, movie sets and more. These three suggestions won't steer you wrong whether you are traveling as a couple or as a family. Be careful, you might have so much fun here in California that you might not leave.
