3 Restaurants We Visit When In Manhattan
By: Erick Arndt
I recently returned from the "city that never sleeps" and I want to talk about food. New York City doesn't just have great sights to see but has some of my favorite restaurants to visit anywhere. If you are going to NY as a couple or as a family, it doesn't matter, you'll enjoy these eating destinations. These are "must-eat-ats" every time we visit the Big Apple.

The meal we look forward to most in Manhattan is surprisingly not pizza. I know, that sounds crazy but it's true. It's actually Barbeque; Dallas BBQ. When most people think barbeque they think about Texas but Dallas BBQ does it right. We enjoy the vibe, the food, and the prices. It's kid-friendly but also a great place for couples to get together and have a great time. My wife and I have grown accustomed to getting the Chicken Special ($10 for 2 full meals!) which gives us each a half-barbequed chicken that is slow-roasted and tender. It includes crispy fries and delicious corn bread too. And the barbeque sauce is fantastic. I suggest adding some hot sauce to really add flavor. I can stand behind their ribs, burgers, and chicken tenders for the kids too. And remember, everything is bigger in Texas. That goes for the drinks. Fishbowl sized margaritas and beer make the meal even more fun. There are several Dallas BBQ locations in Manhattan but I suggest the Upper Westside Location on 72nd St. I'm biased because also happens to be just a few blocks from where I used to live.

We love Mexican Food so there has to be at least one mention from this fare. And my vote goes to Benny's Burritos; not the Upper West Side location but the Lower Westside. It's got that great college and urban vibe. It also has delicious chips and salsa, over-sized and tasty burritos, and giant beverages. The food is fresh and really tasty. The beer is ice-cold and the margaritas are big enough to share; but I don't.

We stayed with family this time so it wasn't a timeshare vacation. But there are always timeshares available at websites from RCI and Interval International. The Manhattan Club has a great famliy-friendly accommodations.

Lastly is Defonte's on the Lower East Side. It's about old-time New York and having good food. The original opened almost 90 years ago in Brooklyn. That was just too far to travel to get a sandwich. At Defonte's you'll love the over-stuffed heros (a New York term) and authentic New York-Italian décor. In my opinion, the sandwich is all in the bread. If you don't have great fresh bread, your sandwich will never cut it. And Defonte's gets that right. I suggest "The Sinatra" (Don't you have to have a Sinatra Sandwich here?), the peppers and eggs hero, and the hot roast beef (with fried eggplant and mozzarella).

Just writing this and I am getting so hungry. The sad part is that I'm back in L.A. now and these places are nowhere in sight. I guess the next article should be about my favorite places to eat here in Southern California. Cheesecake Factory anyone?
