A White Stone and a New Name
Forrest Gump is the life story of a physically and mentally challenged man (Tom Hanks), who accomplishes the incredible with his simple reasoning and persistence.
In one scene, Forrest and his childhood friend Jenny are walking down an old gravel road shaded by hardwood trees. Jenny carries her sandals, and the walk seems pleasant until they happen upon an abandoned, weather-worn house. The sight is horrifying to Jenny. It is her childhood home, a place where Jenny had been abused by her alcoholic father.
Forrest sees the pain etched on Jenny’s face as she walks ahead of him toward the old abandoned house. Suddenly, Jenny throws her shoes at the house and then begins picking up rocks and furiously throwing them towards the house. Years of pent up anger are unleashed. When nothing is left to throw, Jenny falls to the ground crying. Forrest sits down in the muddy driveway beside her, and says, “Sometimes, I guess, there just aren’t enough rocks”.
I am not telling you something new when I say that there are probably some folks reading this who would like to throw a few rocks.
Maybe not at the house that they grew up in and felt pain, maybe they would like to throw a few rocks at the cancer they just found out about. Maybe a rock at a dissolving relationship that no one knows about. Maybe you would throw the rock at depression or at the pain that can’t even be named.
Let Jesus encourage you with these words.
“… To him who overcomes…I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who recieves it.” Rev. 2:17
In the Bible, names are very important. It has to do with a person’s identity. And if they get a new name, it meant they were going to get a new identity, or a new destiny.
Abram became Abraham
Jacob became Israel
Simon became Peter
Jesus looked at Simon and said, “Everybody else calls you Simon; Hot and cold. But that is not what I see. I see a Rock! I think I will call you Rocky. That is your new name.”
A new name is coming your way. Not a new label but a new identity; a new character. It’s about you becoming a creature of unimaginable splendor.
But you’re not going to just get a new name…a new secret name. This is about intimacy with God. In close relationships, people often give each other private names. It’s a way of saying, “I have a special connection with you. You are special.”
New names can mark your life and go to deep places in your soul.
About five years ago I took my oldest boys backpacking in the mountains that I grew up in south central Colorado. We went to some very remote alpine lakes named Deadman. In order to get there it takes two days of intense hiking and climbing with full packs of about 60 pounds over a 13,200’ foot pass. Once you get above tree line there are no trails. The air is remarkably thin. We cross a narrow ridge no wider than your kitchen table with a 1,000’ steep drop on one side and a 1,500’ foot drop on the other. From the look of the unweathered rock lightning likes to strike this narrow part of the ridge so you need to time your passage over it to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms.
The ground is so steep in places that you can reach out your hand perpendicular to your body and touch the ground that you will be walking on in a few minutes. On our descent I have often gotten blisters on the tops of my toes from the friction inside my boots.
But when you get to these lakes they are breath taking. Only about 6-8 parties make the trip to the lakes per year, therefore the cutthroat trout fishing is some of the best in Colorado. It is truly a pristine wilderness experience. It is a painful and invigorating place.
I first went there when I was about 13 years old with my dad and brother. And since that time I have gone back about some 20 times and five years ago I took my oldest boys, one of their friends Ian, and my dad. At that time he was 65 years old.
We experienced a great week of fishing and exploring. We decided to come out a different way than we went in because my Dad’s knee was weak and hurting. It was a route we had only heard about but never tried. All went well until we came across a cliff wall about 75 feet high. I searched and searched for an easy way down. There was no easy way down. I rarely get anxious in the mountains, but with the responsibility of these boys and my Dad, I admit I was nervous.
Finally, I found a cut in the rock that had been filled with snow. I decided to kick step holes in the steep snow wall. I descended with my pack and left it at the bottom. Then I went back up the 75 foot climb, careful to position my feet in the same holes I had made coming down. I put one of my boy’s backs on my back and then kicked stepped under him, helping him put his boots in the exact step. Step by step by step all the way down. Then at the bottom put the pack down and climb up and get another pack for another boy. First Cole, Clint, and then Ian all successfully ferried down the snow ribbon.
The only person left was my father who had watched me carry the boys’ packs down one by one. I sat down beside him at the top of that cliff. We didn’t say a word to each other. We just sat there. Then he said, “You are really good with those boys. You made them feel safe in a dangerous situation” I said thanks. Then we just sat there staring at Sand Creek Valley stretching out before us as if we had no place to go. The boys were below us laughing and enjoying the last rush of adrenalin that was coursing through their veins.
Finally I asked, “How is your knee?”
He barked, “Not good.”
Silence; Long silence.
“How do you want to do this?” I asked.
“I want to take my own pack down” he said.
Silence.
“But you better take it” he said.
“Okay” I said.
I got up put his pack on (which was heavier than mine) and headed towards the snow bank. I put one foot on the snow and suddenly my dad grabbed me by my sleeve, turned me to face him, looked me in the eye and said, “Son, you are my hero”.
I can’t tell you what those words did for me. All I could do was look at him, look down and nod my head.
We slowly descended the cliff and have never spoken about it since.
I never imagined in my wildest dreams that my dad would ever call me ‘hero’. Those words penetrated places deep inside my soul. As incredible as that moment was…it will fade into a distant memory the day Jesus hands me my white stone and calls me by my special name.
Here is what Jesus is saying, “One day you will stand before the One who made you; the One who thought you up. And He is going to hand you a white rock, and on that rock will be the single word you have wanted to hear and be for your whole life.
It might be “Courage” or, “Beauty” or, “Faithful” or, “Beloved”. That’s your name. That is who you are. That which you’ve most longed to be but never came close to because sin has messed you up so much in this world will be realized beyond your wildest dreams. You will be a creature of unimaginable splendor and this is your destiny!
Jesus will say, “This is just between you and me. It’s our little secret. That’s how close we are. That’s how special you are to me.”
You will experience intimacy with God that no one else will share. Not Billy Graham, Mother Teresa, Chuck Swindoll, not the Apostle John himself. They will have their own name—but not yours. You will have the intimacy, belonging and love that you have craved your whole life. You will be made whole by love.
Some rocks are made for throwing; some rocks mean something altogether different. So you just hang on. You just put one foot in front of the other. You will be home soon enough.

I look forward to that new name. Don’t get me wrong, I am OK with my name now, but it seems like when people hear the name Karl, they think of some slow-witted character like Bill Murray’s Carl in Caddyshack.

In my studies I stumbled on Revelations and came across the words “white stone”. Recently I went to a conference and there I was challenged to look at our future position in God as “son’s of god. We can share in our inheritance now. There is an escapist view in the church. When it gets to tough God is just going to take us out. God is equiping us to establish his Kingdom on earth now. As I am studing the seven churches in Revelations I see that God has given the overcomer or the one that is Victorous a new name written on a white stone.
I am suggesting we can receive this new name today. When your father told you “You are my Hero” that has made a profound impact on you. What better time for God to give you a new name and start today, so that he can better use you to establish his kingdom through us. Thankyou for encouraging word.

But that's not what I'm here to talk about. Turn back to Revelation 2:17.
Rev 2:17 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.'
That beautiful promise was given to the church at Smyrna, but it applies to every Christian. If you overcome the flesh, the world, and the devil in this life, then in the next life, Jesus will give you a stone. Is that because you asked Him for bread? (If anyone didn't catch that reference, your homework is to read the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5 through 7.)
The thing to focus on isn't the white stone, it's what is written on that stone. A new name. A new name chosen and given by God Himself. Now that's something to talk about. |

1 Peter 2 : Jesus is like the most important stone in God’s house v4 So come to the *Lord Jesus. He is like a big stone that a builder uses to build a house. He is ‘the stone that is alive’. People decided that he was worth nothing to them. So they refused him. But God chose him. To God, Jesus is like a stone that is worth very, very much. v5 You yourselves also are like stones that are alive, because of Jesus Christ. God is using you, like stones, to build his *spiritual house. He has chosen you to work there as his priests (special servants who offer *sacrifices). As priests you will offer *spiritual *sacrifices to God. And God will be happy with what you offer him, because of Jesus Christ. v6 In the Bible, God says this: ‘Look, I have chosen a stone that is worth very, very much. I have chosen this valuable stone as the most important stone, for the corner of my house. And I am putting that stone in *Zion. Any person who believes him will never be ashamed. That person will never be sorry that they believed him.’ [Isaiah 28:16] v7 This stone is worth very, very much to you who believe. But the Bible says this about the people who do not believe him: ‘The stone that the builders refused has become the most important stone. It has become the stone at the corner of the house.’ [Psalm 118:22] v8 The Bible says this also: ‘This is a stone that will cause people to knock their feet against it so that they fall. It is a rock that will make them fall down.’ [Isaiah 8:14] The reason why it causes people to fall is this. They fall because they refuse to obey God’s message. A long, long time ago, God decided that this would happen to them.

Letter #3 - Pergamum 9 For Jesus' second blessing gift, He says: "I will give-you a stone: small, white STONE. Your new name I will write on that stone." That stone means what? Honestly, we really don't-know. Here is one interesting guess: Long ago, in Greek law courts, a small white stone means a vote for dismissal [sign = "lay-off"], meaning, "Not guilty!" [source: Concordia Self-Study Bible, p. 1949] Jesus Himself accepted all our guilt on His cross. He became guilty instead-of us. Now He says to us, "You are not guilty!" And then He gives us that small white stone, with our new name. What new name? In the Bible we often see people, that God changes their names. ABRAM became ABRAHAM. JACOB became ISRAEL. SIMON became PETER. SAUL became PAUL. http://www.christdeaf.org/bible/7Letters/3-Pergamum.pdf

JESUS WILL GIVE A WHITE STONE TO OVERCOMERS Posted by mercedescoleen under Book Of Revelation Leave a Comment 1. Introduction In the previous post, I wrote that Jesus promised to reveal hidden secrets in His word to those who overcome false teachings. He also continued with another promise: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it (Revelation 2: 17). 2. The white stone means that Jesus had acquitted the repentant from their sin of idolatry Psēphos is the Greek word used for stone in the text. It literally means “a small worn smooth stone, a pebble”. According to Strong’s Concordance of the Bible, black pebbles were used in the ancient courts of justice the to indicate that the accused were condemned. On the other hand, whitae pebbles were used to indicate that an individual had been acquitted. White also represents cleansing and purification (Daniel 12: 10; Isaiah 1: 18; Psalm 51: 7) Therefore, in the context of Revelation 2, Jesus said He would give the white stone to those whom He had acquitted or released from the sin of idolatry. The acquitted were those who had repented of that sin: 14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 3. Overcomers will receive a new name As Lord Jesus ended His message to the church of Pergamos, He promised a new name to those who would repent and overcome the false doctrines of the era: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it (Revelation 2: 17). Here are further references to the new name in scripture: a. A new name is given to the righteous: And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name (Isaiah 62: 2) Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, [Revelation 3: 12)

The promise of an incorruptible crown is to all those who finish the race. Another use of the white stone was that a white stone was often given to honored guests. It was generally inscribed with the host's name. The special guest who received the white stone could use it to purchase, or to order the host's servants to do as they asked. It was used as a sign of authority and power granted by the host. All things that belonged to the host were at the disposal of the special guest. We have this promise in Christ Jesus our Lord. http://www.newfoundationspubl.org/stone.htm

We are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. He has acquitted us from our sin, that we may overcome the sin nature. The white stone was also used in elections. A person voting was given a white stone and a black stone. The white stone meant acceptance - - - the black stone meant rejection. In later years, marbles were used. Most are familiar with the term "blackballed". This meant rejection. Paul wrote to the Ephesians: "To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the Beloved." Ephesians 1:6

C. S. Lewis famously called George MacDonald his “master”. Here is one of my most cherished passages from Lewis’ Anthology of MacDonald’s writings. Enjoy! The White Stone (Revelation 2:17) '"Whoever has ears ought to hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the victor I shall give some of the hidden manna; I shall also give a white amulet upon which is inscribed a new name, which no one knows except the one who receives it."' “The giving of the white stone with the new name is the communication of what God thinks about the man to the man. It is the divine judgment, the solemn holy doom of the righteous man, the “Come, thou blessed,” spoken to the individual . . .The true name is one which expresses the character, the nature, the meaning of the person who bears it. It is the man’s own symbol – his souls’ picture, in a word – the sign which belongs to him and to no one else. Who can give a man this, his own name? God alone. For no one but God sees what the man is . . . It is only when the man had become his name that God gives him the stone with his name upon it, for then first can he understand what his name signifies. It is the blossom, the perfection, the completeness, that determines the name: and God foresees that from the first because He made it so: but the tree of the soul, before its blossom comes, cannot understand what blossom it is to bear and could not know what the word meant, which, in representing is own unarrived completeness, named itself. Such a name cannot be given until the man is the name. God’s name for a man must be the expression of His own idea of the man, that being whom He had in His thought when he began to make the child, and whom He kept in His thought through the long process of creation that went to realize the idea. To tell the name is to seal the success – to say “In thee also I am well pleased.” Here there is no room for ambition. Ambition is the desire to be above one’s neighbor; and here there is no possibility of comparison with one’s neighbor; no one knows what the white stone contains except the man who receives it . . .Relative worth is not only unknown – to the children of the Kingdom, it is unknowable. “God has cared to make me for Himself,” say the victor with the white stone, “And has called me that which I like best.”

Revelation 2:17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it. The White Stone had a special meaning in Ancient Greece. The stone’s inscription gives the believer “a new name,” indicating acceptance by God and his title to glory 1. RECEIVE FREEDOM FROM ACCUSATION When a person was pressed with charges and went to trial they where sometimes entitled to be bailed out of jail by a family member. That person would buy a white stone (pebble) from the court and would give it to the person on trial as a special token. The White stone had to be given to the accuser. As the stone was received the case was closed and there would be no more legal right to go back to court because of the same charges. Matthew 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Jesus bought you a white stone with his blood and the Bible says in Romans 8:1 that “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus” Whenever the devil comes to remind you of your past just remind him of his future! You cannot be accused again since the bail was paid by God’s son! 2. RECEIVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE YOUR LEADERSHIP White stones where cast to vote in political elections. Leadership was elected in a democratic process (Greeks invented democracy). In a public ceremony stones where placed in boxes choosing the people that where chosen to lead. The Bible tells us that the crowd in Jerusalem was presented with an option of giving liberty to a prisoner. The choice was between Jesus and Barrabas (Luke 23:17-21). Jesus lost the popular vote but won God’s election. In the Spiritual world you’ve received a white stone in your hand with your name on it. Who are you going to choose as the leader of your destiny? Yourself?...Satan?...or will you cast your white stone for Jesus? The choice is yours.... 3. RECEIVE SUPERNATURAL VICTORY In the original Olympic games athletes where rewarded with a crown of leaves and a white stone with their name on it. Time would consume the glory of the victory as the crown would dry out but the stone remained as a reminder of the past exploits. Romans 8:37 “... in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Jesus gave us supernatural victory and as we read in Revelation 2:17 “To him that overcometh... I will give him a white stone...” What things do you need to overcome? 1. Is it sin or lust? 2. Are you struggling with addiction? 3. Are you unable to live a Christian life? Remember that the white stone is not for losers and that trough Jesus you are more than conqueror. 4. RECEIVE ALL THINGS In ancient Greece honorable guests to the city would receive from the magistrate a white stone with their name on it. The guest could go to the market and had the right to acquire anything he wanted. The City would pay the expense so the special visitor had unlimited credit and the right to buy anything he wanted. In modern days the French have the expression “Carte Blanche” that goes back to that old tradition. Deep in my pocket I keep a little stone. It is white and smooth , oval shaped and well rounded. I check on it occasionally, pull it out, look at it and let the smoothness glide over my little hand, before I touch it to my cheek. I keep it there today, because later in the day I am going to watch one of my favorite tv-series, a Swedish show called "Den Vita Stenan", "The White Stone" (based on a children's book by Gunnel Linde). I am emulating how the girl holds the white stone in her hand, because I am fully putting myself in her place, living her life as I envision the beautiful parts of Sweden, I have never even visited. I am around 10 years old just like the girl and the boy on the screen, so it is easy for me to imagine myself walking next to the crisply painted white picket fence wearing a clean light dress. The music is spellbinding and the scenery takes you to summer and spring away from the dull and gray part of the Danish winter that seems to have no end, even for a ten year old with a vivid imagination.

The White Stone Bookmark and Share The day has finally arrived. Soulprint officially releases today! Here's a final excerpt from the final chapter titled The White Stone. A day is coming when we will hear the voice of God and He will call us by a name unknown to anyone else but Him. It will be a name we’ve never heard, but we will know it’s our name. It’s a name we were given before our birth, but it’s a name that will be revealed only after our death. That name, our true name, will reveal who we really are. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it. Revelation 2:17

Folk/Rock Hometown Nashville, TN/Chicago, IL Record Label none :) About so that which is good may flourish... Biography Music is such a powerful medium; though in itself only meter and rhyme, chords and lyrics, it can be coupled with passion and purpose...and then things: amazing, holy, world changing things can truly begin with a song. You know this, you've felt it. Music touches you even without lyrics, painting a picture you become aware of in the depth of your being and deep places, where a spark of some kind ignites. The desire of the White Stone Prophecy is to move to that spark...that a Holy Spirit butterfly effect would then result, challenging and encouraging those who hear to move with lives of passion and fire...kindled in a world grown cold. That a desire for Justice and a life of Purpose would displace apathy, and moving in Love would overpower and conquer hate, with Faith to drive away fear and doubt like the feeble mists they have always been. That all the world would seek to know their place in the epic annals of heroes and lovers for "such a time as this"...and would seek to know He who knit them in their mother's wombs for that very purpose. The White Stone Prophecy formed in Chicago during the summer of 2005, but the seeds for the band were planted years ago and grew through various musical projects and the varied life experiences of its members. With this rich musical history as a foundation, the project is able to draw on a variety of influences - from Bob Dylan to the Foo Fighters; The Grateful Dead to The Smashing Pumpkins - to form their acoustic-driven folk-rock sound. The White Stone Prophecy is about a merging of music and service to speak Life to those in many different kinds of need. The service focus of the band lies in it's partnership with My Brother's Keeper International (www.mbki.org), an organization dedicated to meeting the humanitarian and educational needs of children and families in poverty around the world. The White Stone Prophecy seeks to align itself with the heart of Jesus in serving the poor and encouraging the oppressed and the disenfranchised. Each member of the White Stone Prophecy has a background in international service, believing that faith without action is no faith at all. The band seeks to operate within this biblical mandate - desiring to walk in the conviction from which they draw their music, and hoping to positively impact this world in which we live. The White Stone Prophecy invites all who will to awaken, rise, live, and - with a holy fire - *b*u*r*n*
