So I now choose to focus on small steps rather than climbing mountains. I have much better success and am much happier.
Because of health issues, several years ago we were forced to sell a growing business my husband and I had literally built from the ground up, building and all. I learned then I had to take care of myself first. For a driven business person, wife, and mother it was a difficult lesson. I was accustomed to taking care of my family, employees, friends, customers, vendors, and our business. Abruptly, I had to learn to switch gears and concentrate on me and exactly what was and was not good for me. Because of my particular situation, I spent much of my time isolated from other people. I had a lot of time to determine what was really important in life.
While the process was long and depressing, in retrospect, I have grown to appreciate that period in my life. As we embark on the New Year, I encourage each one of you to take a few minutes all alone for yourself and reassess your situation. Don't wait until you are forced to look at your life. If you are working a business, ask yourself these questions:
1) If tomorrow your life would change forever and you found yourself short on time, would you continue in your current business?
2) If given that drastic change, would you regret time you have spent in your business?
3) Are there intangibles you gain from your business which make you a better person?
Notice, I said nothing about money, houses, cars, vacations, or all the luxury items often promoted by the internet business ventures. We're talking the deep stuff. You really need to think through these things. Life is far too precious to waste a single day. Do you take a minute to ask yourself what was the best part of each day? Ask your family or spouse? You may be surprised at some of the answers they give. It's humbling and eye-opening.
What I've discovered about myself through these questions and the obstacles I've personally faced is I am responsible for my happiness. My happiness comes from being with and helping others, especially children. I know health cannot be taken for granted, yet we control far more of it than we like to believe. I also believe we have a duty to ensure a safe place for children so they are protected and can grow up as healthy as possible.
What you discover about yourself during a few quiet moments of reflection may move you forward in your existing business. It may cause you to wonder if you're spinning your wheels.
